ClosetMate

a digital wardrobe.

As someone who loves clothes, I often found myself stuck choosing what to wear, especially when plans or events came up. It got confusing and time-consuming, and I realized this struggle probably isn’t just mine. I also felt it would be really helpful if I could see everything from my wardrobe on my phone. When I didn’t find proper app that did this, I decided to explore designing something around it.

“I often find it hard to pick an outfit quickly, which wastes time, and I also have trouble choosing the right outfit for the right occasion.”

“I often end up making my wardrobe messy while searching for what to wear, and I also struggle to decide what to wear without being able to visualize the full outfit.”

🤔 Hypothesis

So if we make outfit selection faster, give the right outfit options based on their needs, keep the app compact and minimal, and let users see the full outfit to visualize it better, it might solve most of the struggle.

In this video, I walk through the main features of ClosetMate: how to choose an outfit, scan clothing, get suggestions by weather, occasion, or personal preference, as well as the simple onboarding journey.

PROBLEM

Choosing the right outfit at the right time is often harder than it seems for me. I lose time, deal with confusion, and face decision fatigue because I have too many options and no easy way to see what works for the situation. This makes a simple daily task feel heavier than it should.

RESEARCH

SECONDARY RESEARCH

  1. I read a few papers and learned that people face wardrobe problems intentionally and unintentionally, and that organized planning helps.
  2. One paper suggested a wardrobe-management app, and another talked about overconsumption and how a virtual wardrobe might help.
  3. What amused me most was how this connects to consumer behaviour, smarter clothing use, and how structured systems reduce overchoice and confusion.

This helped me connect the dots and made me realize that a digital wardrobe is a way to go. People are more open to using tech now and bridging both might solve a problem.

INTERVIEWS

I interviewed 3–4 people to understand how they choose what to wear, and here’s what I got to know.

  1. Many said daily outfits are quick, but event outfits take more time and bring confusion.
  2. Even people who decide fast told me they still get frustrated sometimes.
  3. A lot of them talked about shortlisting a few outfits, and said their wardrobe gets messy during the process.
  4. Some said they struggle to visualize outfits without trying them on and felt it would help if they could see the outfit in one place.

COMPETITOR AUDIT

There are two apps that stood out to me in the digital-closet space: Whering and Acloset. I didn’t really like Acloset — even though it has features like an AI stylist, everything felt too congested. Whering was much more user-friendly, but it focused more on creating outfits and community, and didn’t really solve my main pain point of suggesting what to wear based on weather or occasions. Overall, both apps helped me see what’s missing and what could be improved.

REFLECTIONS

From user feedback, I noticed that while the UI and colors felt good, some parts like the weather/occasion section weren’t noticeable at first, which tells me I need to improve visibility and flow. Users also wanted more flexibility, like mixing outfit pieces across outfits, which shows I need to rethink how rigid the current structure is. Overall, the feedback showed me that the core idea works but still needs refinement.
